The university held an event called ‘Future’s Festival’, in which several guest speakers came to the university and held small talks about an area they specialise in. There was at least one speaker per course, some had more than others, and all students were welcome to attend more than one from every course related talk. Some talked specifically towards the course, others talked on a broader topic such as the working environment, working in an arts related programme, and internships. This was a huge help to students wanting to know more on the real world and what it’s really like within the artistic field. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend due to illness, but I got my friends to record it and take notes. (What little angels!) They were all really helpful, but the one that caught my attention was surprisingly the talk about Internships. I never felt like an Internship was for me; but I think that was mainly because I had never really been told about them properly. All the opportunities, the contacts and networking it can give you, not the mention that you get paid. Now this is just a small section of the things I learnt at this Future Festival, and I’ll be sure to go to more guest speakers talks. Although they may not seem interesting at first, it’s taught me to not judge a book by its cover, and to give the guest a chance to talk about something they enjoy. They might just sway you!

The university held an event for the Hadfield Trust which I attended with a few friends. It was informative and let me get to know more about the award itself. The award gives a student an opportunity to receive funding for something that is needed within their studies. Such as travel costs for a project, it gives students the chance to apply for the funding with a proposal form and everything. However, I wasn’t too bothered about the funding as I had nothing I really needed funding at that present time. It was good to attend though and it gave me information about it for future references though!
LISS Support is a fantastic resource which I personally feel everyone should take advantage of the facility. At first, I thought this was just for students who were academically challenged, turns out, it not. It’s for anyone who just wants to get their work reviewed from a helping hand. They’re not mean about it, they bring up questions within your work like “Why did you use that word?”, if they think it could benefit from using a different word; or “What about this topic to talk about or this artist/academic person”. Things are things that I didn’t notice in my work and they needed it. It was nice to send it off to someone other than my parents or classmate, someone who would actually take their time to read through your work and correct it where it’s needed. It was really good for my self-esteem both academically and practically. Since I felt better in my academic pieces, it made me feel more confident when photographing practically my projects. Gave me a sense of relaxation and ease to my mind.
